Martin Luther King Jr.

Honoring a hero...

Today, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, is the day we honor an activist and civil rights leader who forever changed the world with his powerful drive for peace and equality. A quick Google search reveals that the top hits for MLK searches are “What’s open and what’s closed?”. We all have busy lives and no one can be faulted for needing to know banking hours; however, it’s important that although our lives will carry on today, we don’t forget to recognize and reflect on the impact of one of the greatest voices for equality in American history.

Martin Luther King Jr. was a leader of change, who stood in virtuous and vocal opposition to injustice. In King’s 1963 “Letter from a Birmingham Jail”, he wrote, “Lamentably, it is a historical fact that privileged groups seldom give up their privileges voluntarily.” King’s message, despite being over fifty years old, still rings true today.

From Sen. John Lewis to 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, people are peacefully taking a stand against injustice. Agree or disagree with their messages, people today are following in the footsteps of MLK Jr. and firmly addressing issues of privilege and inequity.

In his same letter King said, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly.” It is based on beliefs like King’s that Allinium is steadfast in our goals of highlighting privilege and eliminating inequality.
